Diabetes 'n Me
Controlling diabetes does not have to be difficult. As you know, doctors can make it sound overwhelming, but we can overcome regardless. Learning the reasons for the choices we all need to make is of utmost importance. If you're like me, you love the taste of sugar and it is very difficult to moderate your choices in diet to the level required to stay healthy.
The topics of interest to diabetics are often the same topics that everyone should be concerned about. A nutritious diet, weight control, exercise, healthy mental outlook -- all of these apply whether you are a diabetic or not. We have additional concerns, though. Dry skin, foot care concerns, eye health checks, frequent tests of blood sugar levels and albumen for kidney health. We might need to learn to inject insulin, conduct our own cholesterol and A1c tests, and conduct ourselves in a way that keeps all of the subsystems of our bodies functioning.
Diabetes can be a slow killer or it can be an inconvenient partner in life. It is usually our own choice which it is.
Our doctors tell us that with proper medical care and personal attention we can avoid most or even all of the horrible complications that have destroyed the lives of so many in years past. In the future, diabetes may even be curable. There are some areas of research which show great promise.
