Conclusions: The LTC dietitians' various roles were generally self-appointed, and they focused more on the purpose of their work than on tasks. A primary focus of these roles was the multidisciplinary team and the promotion of effective teamwork, especially, but not exclusively, as it applies to the provision of nutritional care. Successful teamwork was linked to dietitians' reports of personal success in their work.

Authors: McKnight K, Farmer A, Zuberbuhler L, Mager D
A web-based cross-country survey of renal registered dietitians (RRDs) was launched. It was used to assess whether or not their clinical practice in identifying and treating protein-energy malnutrition (PEM) in adults with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) and dialysis was based on current nutrition practice guidelines (NPGs). The survey included questions on strategies, timelines, and markers used for the identification and treatment of PEM. Fifty-nine RRDs responded (21%). Sixty-seven percent did not base clinical practice on NPGs, while 33% indicated they followed the guidelines. Of those who followed guidelines, 76% use the National Kidney Foundation-Kidney Disease Outcomes Quality Initiative nutrition guidelines. Strategies used t... Perceived roles, benefits, and supports for dietetic internship preceptors. Authors: Ortman D, Mann L, Arsenault JF
Evaluation of university-run dietetic internship programs will improve preceptors' experience and, ultimately, increase the capacity for training future dietitians. We attempted to identify preceptors' perceptions of their roles, benefits, and supports, as well as of the skills/traits that students need for internship, and suggested improvements for the internship program. Fifteen of 39 current program preceptors who had supervised more than one intern consented to participate in an ethics-approved research methodology. They responded anonymously to a series of questions posted in an online discussion group, and provided feedback on the subsequent reports. While no consensus emerged, more than 50% of participants perceived their role as providing... Risks and benefits of fish consumption for childbearing women. Authors: Del Gobbo LC, Archbold JA, Vanderlinden LD, Eckley CS, Diamond ML, Robson M
Pregnant women's fish consumption provides both benefits and risks to the developing fetus. Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) from fish may enhance fetal neurodevelopment, while methylmercury (MeHg) can have detrimental effects. Dietitians would benefit from information on the frequency with which fish species may be consumed to increase DHA intake among Canadian women of childbearing age, and on minimizing the risks from MeHg, especially for those who consume fish frequently. Eighteen fish species were selected for DHA and mercury analysis from retail markets in the Toronto area. Consumption scenarios using analytical results for these fish species indicate that women of childbearing age can consume nine of ... Charitable Food Programs in Victoria, BC. Contact angle ([theta]) of sessile drops of [kappa]-casein ([kappa]-CN) or [beta]-lactoglobulin A ([beta]-LGA) were measured on the MI. Pre-coating of MI with un-fractionated WPH decreased [theta], that is, increased surface activity, of both [kappa]-CN (35[ndash]8.3°) and [beta]-LGA (38[ndash]21.3°). Conversely, pre-coating of MI with the fractions significantly increased [theta] of both proteins as a function of hydrophobicity. A recent systematic review showed that parents typically fail to recognise obesity in their children and adolescents, and a good deal of other evidence suggests that health professionals under-diagnose obesity in children and adolescents when using informal methods based on observation. There is therefore a need for practical, objective, methods that both identify the fattest children and adolescents adequately, and identify those who are at greatest risk of the 'co-morbidities' of obesity. A large body of consistent evidence shows that a high body mass index (BMI) for age and sex identifies the fattest children adequ... Maternal nutritional status before and during pregnancy is important for the growth and development of the fetus. The effects of pre-pregnancy nutrition (estimated by maternal size) are well documented. There is little information in today's Western society on the effect of maternal nutrition during pregnancy on the fetus. The aim of the study was to describe dietary patterns of a cohort of mothers during pregnancy (using principal components analysis with a varimax rotation) and assess the effect of these dietary patterns on the risk of delivering a small-for-gestational-age (SGA) baby. The study was a case-control study investigating factors related to SGA. The population was 1714 subjects in Auckland, New Zea... Combining enteral with parenteral nutrition to improve postoperative glucose control. Authors: Lidder P, Flanagan D, Fleming S, Russell M, Morgan N, Wheatley T, Rahamin J, Shaw S, Lewis S
The provision of parenteral nutrition (PN) to 'stressed' patients often results in hyperglycaemia, which may be detrimental. In animal models limited amounts of enteral nutrition (EN) improve intestinal integrity and stimulate intestinal incretin production, which may lead to improved glucose control. We set out to assess if combining EN with PN results in improved glucose homeostasis rather than PN given alone. We conducted a randomised trial in a university teaching hospital of patients undergoing a 'curative' oesophagectomy for adenocarcinoma. Differences between the two intervention groups were assessed for continuous glucose measurement, insulin sensitivity using insulin tolerance... UK Food Standards Agency Workshop Report: Diet and Immune Function. The objective of the workshop was to review this research and to establish priorities for future research. Several of the trials presented at the workshop showed some effect of nutritional interventions (e.g. vitamin D, Zn, Se) on immune parameters. One trial found that increased fruit and vegetable intake may improve the antibody response to pneumococcal vaccination in older people. The workshop highlighted the need to further clarify the potential public health relevance of observed nutrition-related changes in immune function, e.g. susceptibility to infections and infectious morbidity.

Maternal protein restriction with or without folic acid supplementation during pregnancy alters the hepatic transcriptome in adult male rats. Authors: Lillycrop KA, Rodford J, Garratt ES, Slater-Jefferies JL, Godfrey KM, Gluckman PD, Hanson MA, Burdge GC
Feeding pregnant rats a protein-restricted (PR) diet induces altered expression of candidate genes in the liver of the adult offspring, which can be prevented by supplementation of the PR diet with folic acid (PRF). We investigated the effect of maternal nutrition during pregnancy on the liver transcriptome in their adult male offspring. Pregnant rats were fed control, PR or PRF diets. Male offspring were killed on day 84. The liver transcriptome was analysed by microarray (six livers per maternal dietary group) followed by post hoc analysis of relative mRNA levels and gene ontology. These results were confirmed for selected genes by real-time RT-PCR. There were 311 genes th... Sex differences in the effects of maternal vitamin supplements on mortality and morbidity among children born to HIV-infected women in Tanzania. Lycopene in fruits and vegetables occurs mostly (80-97 %) in the all-E configuration, whereas a considerable proportion of lycopene in the human body is present as Z-isomers. The Z-isomers offer potentially better health benefits and show improved antioxidant activity in vitro when compared with the all-E-isomer. The absorption of dietary lycopene is a complex process involving transfer of the carotenoid from the food matrix into micelles, uptake by enterocytes, packaging into chylomicrons and finally secretion into plasma. Isomerisation could take place at any of these individual steps. By exploiting in vitro and in vivo models, we traced lycopene isomerisation during absorption using various methods to mim...<div id="medworm"><p><b><i>MedWorm Message:</i></b> Get the very latest Swine Flu news via the MedWorm <b><a href="http://www.medworm.com/rss/search.php?qu=%2Bswine+%2B%28influenza+flu%29&t=Swine+Flu&f=infectiousdiseases&r=Any&o=d" target ="_self">Swine Flu RSS news feed</a></b> - updated hourly from thousands of authoritative health and news sources.</p></div> A health assessment tool for multiple risk factors for obesity: age and sex differences in the prediction of body mass index. Four goats (20 (SD 2.5) kg) fitted with ruminal, duodenal and ileal cannulae were used in a 4 x 4 Latin square design to estimate the effects of a dietary starch source on the duodenal and ileal flows of endogenous N (EN) and endogenous amino acids (EAA) in growing goats. Goats were fed total mixed rations containing four starch sources (mainly from maize (MR), wheat (WR), paddy (PR) and sorghum (SR) treatments). There were no significant (P>0.05) effects of the dietary starch source on the intestinal flows of EN and EAA. The duodenal flows of EN were 2.40, 2.39, 2.18 and 1.56 g/d for the MR, WR, PR and SR treatments, respectively, as determined by the difference method, and the duodenal flows of EAA were 10.76, 11.2...<div id="medworm"><p><b><i>MedWorm Message:</i></b> Get the very latest Swine Flu news via the MedWorm <b><a href="http://www.medworm.com/rss/search.php?qu=%2Bswine+%2B%28influenza+flu%29&t=Swine+Flu&f=infectiousdiseases&r=Any&o=d" target ="_self">Swine Flu RSS news feed</a></b> - updated hourly from thousands of authoritative health and news sources.</p></div> Body mass index and the risk of infections in institutionalised geriatric patients. Authors: Kuwabara A, Himeno M, Tsugawa N, Kamao M, Fujii M, Kawai N, Fukuda M, Ogawa Y, Kido S, Okano T, Tanaka K
There have been methodological problems for studying hypovitaminosis D and K in the elderly. First, studies were done either by evaluating food intake or measuring their circulating levels, but rarely by both in Japan. In this paper, vitamin D and K intakes and their circulating levels were simultaneously determined. Second issue is whether hypovitaminosis D and K are independent of general malnutrition, prevalent in the elderly. We tried to statistically discriminate them by principal component analysis (PCA). Fifty institutionalized elderly were evaluated for their circulating 25 hydroxy-vitamin D (25OH-D), intact parathyroid hormone (PTH), phylloquinone (PK), menaquinone... High prevalence of low HDL-c in the Philippines compared to the US: population differences in associations with diet and BMI. Authors: Rutherford JN, McDade TW, Feranil AB, Adair LS, Kuzawa CW
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a leading cause of death in the Philippines, although few studies here have examined the lipid profiles underlying disease risk. The isolated low high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c) phenotype has been implicated as a CVD risk factor, the prevalence of which exhibits significant variation across populations. To assess population variation in individual lipid components and their associations with diet and anthropometric characteristics, we compare lipid profiles in a population of adult Filipino women (n=1877) to US women participating in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES, n=477). Authors: Kendall CW, Esfahani A, Truan J, Srichaikul K, Jenkins DJ
The effects of tree nuts on risk factors for coronary heart disease (CHD), in particular blood lipids, have been investigated in a number of studies and the beneficial effects are now recognized. The beneficial effects of nuts on CHD in cohort studies have also been clearly demonstrated. However, while there is also reason to believe the unique micro- and macronutrient profiles of nuts may help to control blood glucose levels, relatively few studies have investigated their role in diabetes control and prevention. Nuts are low in available carbohydrate, have a healthy fatty acid profile, and are high in vegetable protein, fiber and magnesium. Acute feeding studies indicate that when eaten alone nuts have minimal effects ... The phytochemical composition and antioxidant actions of tree nuts. Authors: Bolling BW, McKay DL, Blumberg JB
In addition to being a rich source of several essential vitamins and minerals, mono- and polyunsaturated fatty acids, and fiber, most tree nuts provide an array of phytochemicals that may contribute to the health benefits attributed to this whole food. Although many of these constituents remain to be fully identified and characterized, broad classes include the carotenoids, hydrolyzable tannins, lignans, naphthoquinones, phenolic acids, phytosterols, polyphenols, and tocopherols. These phytochemicals have been shown to possess a range of bioactivity, including antioxidant, antiproliferative, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and hypocholesterolemic properties. This review summarizes the current knowledge of the carotenoid, phenolic, and tocopherol... Nuts, inflammation and insulin resistance. Authors: Casas-Agustench P, Bullo M, Salas-Salvado J
The beneficial effects of nut consumption on cardiovascular disease (CVD) have been widely documented. These protective effects are mainly attributed to the role of nuts in the metabolism of lipids and lipoproteins. As chronic inflammation is a key early stage in the atherosclerotic process that predicts future CVD events and is closely related to the pathogenesis of insulin resistance, many recent studies have focused on the potential effect of nut consumption on inflammation and insulin resistance. Through different mechanisms, some components of nuts such as magnesium, fiber, alpha-linolenic acid, L-arginine, antioxidants and MUFA may protect against inflammation and insulin resistance. This review evaluates the epidemiologic and ... Nuts, blood lipids and cardiovascular disease. Authors: Sabate J, Wien M
The aim of this paper is to evaluate nut-related epidemiological and human feeding study findings and to discuss the important nutritional attributes of nuts and their link to cardiovascular health. Frequent nut consumption has been found to be protective against coronary heart disease in five large epidemiological studies across two continents. A qualitative summary of the data from four of these studies found an 8.3% reduction in risk of death from coronary heart disease for each weekly serving of nuts. Over 40 dietary intervention studies have been conducted evaluating the effect of nut containing diets on blood lipids. These studies have demonstrated that intake of different kinds of nuts lower total and LDL cholesterol and the LDL: HDL ratio in healthy su... Nuts and healthy body weight maintenance mechanisms. Authors: Mattes RD, Dreher ML
Nuts are rich sources of multiple nutrients and phytochemicals associated with health benefits, including reduced cardiovascular disease risk. This has prompted recommendations to increase their consumption. However, they are also high in fat and are energy dense. The associations between these properties, positive energy balance and body weight raise questions about such recommendations. Numerous epidemiological and clinical studies show that nuts are not associated with weight gain. Mechanistic studies indicate this is largely attributable to the high satiety and low metabolizable energy (poor bioaccessibility leading to inefficient energy absorption) properties of nuts. Compensatory dietary responses account for 55-75% of the energy provided by nuts. In two studies, it was examined whether dietary restraint is associated with stronger positive implicit attitudes toward high calorie food. This hypothesis was tested using unipolar IAT variants that allowed us to separately measure and examine positive and negative implicit associations with high calorie food. In both studies, results showed that restrained eaters do not differ from unrestrained eaters with respect to negative implicit associations with high calorie food. However, dietary restraint does influence the strength of positive implicit associations with high calorie food: When positive implicit associations with high calorie food were measured relative to low calorie food, restrained and unrestrained eaters did not differ with respect to... There were no overall differences in systolic BP (SBP), diastolic BP or pulse pressure (PP) between the dietary groups after the intervention. The high-fat diet rich in saturated fat had minor unfavourable effects on SBP and PP in males.

Participants (averaged 21.5 yr) received 0, 2, or 8 mg astaxanthin (n = 14/diet) daily for 8 wk in a randomized double-blind, placebo-controlled study. Immune response was assessed on wk 0, 4 and 8, and tuberculin test performed on wk 8.
Results:
Plasma astaxanthin increased (P < 0.01) dose-dependently after 4 or 8 wk of supplementation. Astaxanthin decrea... Nutritional and therapeutic value of fermented caprine milk Caprine milk is a nutritional and therapeutic food. The unique and beneficial characteristics of caprine milk that are superior to bovine milk include: better digestibility; greater buffering capacity; fat globules that are smaller in diameter and better distributed in the milk emulsion; higher content of short-chain fatty acids in the milk fat; higher content of zinc, iron and magnesium; stronger lactoperoxidase (antimicrobial) system as well as better immunological and antibacterial characteristics. The larger amounts of some minerals, such as calcium, zinc and magnesium, in caprine milk may influence the growth of lactic acid bacteria since they are a normal part of some enzymatic complexes involved in lactose fermentation. The higher whey protein content could also be significant becau...<div id="medworm"><p><b><i>MedWorm Message:</i></b> Get the very latest Swine Flu news via the MedWorm <b><a href="http://www.medworm.com/rss/search.php?qu=%2Bswine+%2B%28influenza+flu%29&t=Swine+Flu&f=infectiousdiseases&r=Any&o=d" target ="_self">Swine Flu RSS news feed</a></b> - updated hourly from thousands of authoritative health and news sources.</p></div> Strategic Research Program Needed To Determine Whether, HowPast Climate Influenced Human Evolution Understanding how past climate may have influenced human evolution could be dramatically enhanced by an international cross-disciplinary research program to improve the sparse human fossil and incomplete climate records and examine the link between the two, says a new report from the National Research Council... Authors: Stok FM, Ridder DT, Adriaanse MA, Wit JB
Being integral to adolescent health, autonomy presumably also is related to adolescent unhealthy snacking. We distinguish two differently motivated forms of autonomy: agentic autonomy, driven by a motivation to self-regulate, and self-presentational autonomy, driven by motives of image cultivation. The present study aimed to investigate the differential associations of these two types of motivation with unhealthy snack purchase in a prospective study among 105 adolescents. Results confirmed that agentic autonomy correlated with less unhealthy snack purchase, while self-presentational autonomy correlated with increased unhealthy snack purchase in males but not in females. This supports the hypothesis that autonomy is related to adolescen...<div id="medworm"><p><b><i>MedWorm Message:</i></b> Get the very latest Swine Flu news via the MedWorm <b><a href="http://www.medworm.com/rss/search.php?qu=%2Bswine+%2B%28influenza+flu%29&t=Swine+Flu&f=infectiousdiseases&r=Any&o=d" target ="_self">Swine Flu RSS news feed</a></b> - updated hourly from thousands of authoritative health and news sources.</p></div> Development and preliminary validation of the Toddler Snack Food Feeding Questionnaire. This study describes the development of a measure of parental influences on toddlers' intake of snack foods, the Toddler Snack Food Feeding Questionnaire (TSFFQ), and presents evidence for the factor structure, test-retest reliability, convergent, discriminant and concurrent validity of the instrument. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) was conducted in two samples (parents of toddlers stating current practices; parents of preschoolers recalling past practices). EFA identified five meaningful and interpretable factors: Rules, Flexibility, Allow Access, Self-efficacy and Child's Attraction. Allow Access, Flexibility, and Child's Attraction were positively correlated with frequency of toddlers' snack food consumption. In the preschool sample only, not-overweight and overweight parents both ha... Peer influence on snacking behavior in adolescence. Authors: Wouters EJ, Larsen JK, Kremers SP, Dagnelie PC, Geenen R
To examine the association of adolescents' snack and soft drink consumption with friendship group snack and soft drink consumption, availability of snacks and soft drinks at school, and personal characteristics, snack and soft drink consumption was assessed in 749 adolescents (398 girls, 351 boys, age 12.4 - 17.6 years), and their friends, and snack and soft drink availability at schools was measured. In regression analysis, consumption by friends, snack and soft drink availability within school, and personal characteristics (age, gender, education level, body mass index) were examined as determinants of snack and drink consumption. Snack and soft drink consumption was higher in boys, soft drink consumption was higher in... Effect of diet, sex and age on fatty acid metabolism in broiler chickens: SFA and MUFA. Authors: Poureslami R, Turchini GM, Raes K, Huyghebaert G, De Smet S
The present study was conducted to evaluate the effect of different dietary lipid sources, age and sex on the SFA and MUFA metabolism in broiler chickens using a whole body fatty acid balance method. Four dietary lipid sources (palm fat, Palm; soyabean oil, Soya; linseed oil, Lin; and fish oil, Fish) were added at 3 % to a basal diet containing 5 % Palm. Diets were fed to female and male chickens from day 1 to either day 21 or day 42 of age. The accumulation (percentage of net intake and ex novo production) of SFA and MUFA was significantly lower in broilers fed on Palm than in broilers fed on the other diets (85.7 v. 97.4 %). Conversely, beta-oxidation was significantly higher in Palm-fed birds than the average of th... Another approach to estimating the reliability of the glycaemic index: a different interpretation. The 12.5-kb long nucleotide sequence contains 20 coding regions, 11 of which can be assigned functions by homologue searching and domain characterisation. With the exception of one uncharacterised protein cluster, genes encoded by Lcazh1 shared extensive similarities and strong synteny with the prophage Lp3 found in the chromosome of Lactobacillus plantarum WCSF1. It is the first time that prophages from different species of Lactobacillus were observed sharing clear similarities, implicating the possibility of lateral DNA transfer. We have observed that the heat treatments lower than 85°C for 10 min did not affect the antibacterial activity of the protein. Hydrolysates of bovine lactoferrin were found to be more active than the native protein against the three pathogens. Moreover, the antibacterial effect of bovine lactoferrin was also assayed in milk and whey, and although we found a reduction in the number of viable cells, this reduction was lower than in culture media. The aim of this study was to examine the effects of enzymatic crosslinking on IgE binding, allergenicity and digestion stability of [beta]-casein (CN). [beta]-CN was crosslinked by transglutaminase, tyrosinase, mushroom tyrosinase/caffeic acid and laccase/caffeic acid. The IgE binding to [beta]-CN was compared in vitro by CAP inhibition assay, ELISA inhibition as well as ex vivo by basophil activation assay. Crosslinked CNs were digested by simulated gastric fluid for 15 and 60 min and obtained digests analyzed for their ability to inhibit IgE binding by CAP inhibition assay and SDS-PAGE. The ability of crosslinked CNs to activate basophils was significantly reduced in seven patients in the case of CN crosslinked ... Vitamin E supplementation and mammalian lifespan Vitamin E refers to a family of several compounds that possess a similar chemical structure comprising a chromanol ring with a 16-carbon side chain. The degree of saturation of the side chain, and positions and nature of methyl groups designate the compounds as tocopherols or tocotrienols. Vitamin E compounds have antioxidant properties due to a hydroxyl group on the chromanol ring. Recently, it has been suggested that vitamin E may also regulate signal transduction and gene expression. We previously reported that lifelong dietary vitamin E ([alpha]-tocopherol) supplementation significantly increased median lifespan in C57BL/6 mice by 15%. This lifespan extension appeared to be independent of any antioxidant effect. Employing a transcriptional approach, we suggest that this increase in lif... Molecular mechanisms of membrane transport of vitamin E Vitamin E is an essential fat-soluble micronutrient for higher mammals and functions as an antioxidant for lipids and also as a regulator of gene expression and a modulator of cell signaling and proliferation. To exert its physiological functions, vitamin E must achieve an appropriate disposition throughout the body via several processes, such as intestinal absorption, uptake and efflux in peripheral tissues and biliary secretion. In this review, we mainly discuss membrane proteins involved in these transport processes (ATP-binding cassette transporter A1, scavenger receptor class B type I, Niemann-Pick C1-like 1 and multidrug resistance 3) and vitamin E-mediated regulation of their expression. Diabetes, A Common Condition By Mitamins Team Essential natural ingredients are included in this formula; for example, chromium, which helps to regulate blood sugar level and indirectly affects level of fats in the blood, and taurine, which may improve insulin sensitivity and decrease cholesterol level. Are you familiar with some of the symptoms of diabetes? They include fatigue, thirst, weight loss, blurred vision and frequent urination. However, there are some sufferers who show no symptoms at all. can be diagnosed by a blood test. Ingredients that can optimize blood sugar levels and improve the overall health condition are included in this natural treatment formula. Some examples of the essential natural ingredients included are: chromium, which helps to regulate blood sugar as well as the level of fats in the blood; and taurine, which may improve insulin sensitivity and decrease cholesterol levels. Diabetes is a disorder characterized by abnormally high blood glucose levels. People with diabetes cannot properly process glucose, a sugar the body uses for energy. As a result, with Diabetes, glucose tends to move inefficiently from the bloodstream to the tissues of the body where it is needed. Therefore, even while blood glucose levels are elevated, the rest of the body can be starved for glucose. Chromium helps to regulate the blood sugar level and indirectly affects the level of fats in

People with Diabetes may have complications with wound healing, may have higher risk of infections, and may suffer damage to the kidneys, nerves, and heart. Certain enzymes needed to repair wounds contain zinc, an essential mineral to repair wounds, maintain fertility, help cells reproduce, preserve vision, boost immunity, and protect against free radicals, among other functions. Vitamins C and E, and phytonutrients in Bilberry, all antioxidants, prevent damage to the nerves, eyes, and heart. Chromium is an element which has functions of regulating blood sugar levels and controlling levels of fat in the blood. For relieving symptoms of nerve damage and improving the glucose-lowering action of insulin, A-Lipoic Acid may be useful. Preventing diabetic nerve damage as well as production of enzymes that convert glucose to energy are actions which can be assisted with the Vitamin B Complex. Flaxseed has two main uses - one is in lowering cholesterol, thereby protecting against heart disease. Another is its essential fatty acids which protect against nerve damage and keep blood supply of arteries consistent. Vitamins C and E, and phytonutrients in Bilberry, all antioxidants, prevent damage to the nerves, eyes, and heart. Insulin production or release can be increased by Gymnema. Insulin sensitivity can be improved and cholesterol levels can be lowered with Taurine. Zinc is an essential mineral that is a component of enzymes needed to repair wounds, maintain fertility in adults, help cells reproduce, preserve vision, boost immunity, and protect against free radicals, among other functions. Copper is needed with long-term use of zinc, because zinc inhibits copper absorption. For this purpose, accumulating evidence suggests increasing plasma adiponectin levels can be a key treatment strategy, especially in setting of food or drug selection. Here we report that adipocyte precursors obtained from several sites of fat tissue, which we call Metabolic Stem Cells (MSC), could be used as a novel screening system to identify adiponectin enhancing drugs or food for individual patients. MSC were prepared from fat tissues collected from 29 patients. They were differentiated in cultures into mature adipocytes. The time course of adiponectin produc... T2D is caused by a combination of insulin resistance and [bgr]-cell failure and can be treated with insulin sensitizing drugs that target the nuclear receptor peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR) [ggr]. Extracts of elderflowers (Sambucus nigra) have been found to activate PPAR[ggr] and to stimulate insulin-dependent glucose uptake suggesting that they have a potential use in the prevention and/or treatment of insulin resistance. Bioassay-guided chromatographic fractionation of a methanol extract of elderflowers resulted in the identification of two well-known PPAR[ggr] agonists; [agr]-linolenic acid and linoleic acid as well as the flavanone naringenin. According to the National Diabetes Information Clearinghouse, between 12,000 to 24,000 new cases of blindness every year are attributed to diabetes.
If you have diabetes, what can you do to protect your vision?
Try to keep your blood sugar levels in a normal range. High blood sugar can damage delicate blood vessels in the eye.
Visit an eye doctor regularly for checkups.
If you notice any changes in your vision, call your eye doctor immediately.

Paradoxical Decrease in High-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol with Fenofibrate: A Quite Rare Phenomenon Indeed Some recent clinical reports have suggested that paradoxical decreases in high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) levels after fenofibrate treatment may be quite common. These appear to occur mainly in patients with combined fibrate/statin therapy and possibly in those with low baseline HDL-C. Reports on HDL-C reductions after fenofibrate are possibly supported by the disappointing results in terms of HDL-C responses from the recent FIELD study. A survey on 581 patients treated for 1 year or longer was carried out in our Clinical Center. This indicated that paradoxical HDL-C reductions are a relatively uncommon phenomenon. Not more than 15.3% of the present series showed an HDL-C reduction, mostly of a modest degree. Further, reductions of HDL-C appear to occur mainly in individuals w... Targeting the pentose phosphate pathway in syndrome X-related cardiovascular complications Syndrome X is a combination or co-occurrence of several known cardiovascular risk factors (including central obesity, dyslipidemias, fatty liver disease, hyperinsulinemia, insulin resistance, and hypertension) that affects at least one in five people in developed countries. Syndrome X shortens life and increases morbidity by contributing to the development of both diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Type 1 or 2 diabetes affects approximately 170 million people globally, and these numbers are rapidly rising. In patients with diabetes, vascular diseases develop early and progress at an accelerated rate. It has recently become evident that glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD), the rate-limiting enzyme in the pentose-phosphate pathway and its reaction products play key roles in regulating... Unfortunately, the research over the last 25 years is quite clear. There is simply no evidence that any of these approaches results in long-term weight loss for the vast majority of people who engage in them. There are no exceptions and none of the approaches (low fat, low calorie, low carb, etc.) work any better than any of the others.

FXR activation reverses insulin resistance and lipid abnormalities and protects against liver steatosis in Zucker (fa/fa) obese rats [Research Articles] In this study, we investigated the effect of FXR activation by 6-ethyl-chenodeoxycholic acid, (6E-CDCA, 10 mg/kg) on insulin resistance and liver and muscle lipid metabolism in fa/fa rats and compared its activity with rosiglitazone (10 mg/kg) alone or in combination with 6E-CDCA (5 mg/kg each). In comparison to lean (fa/+), fa/fa rats on a normal diet developed insulin resistance and liver steatosis. FXR activation protected against body weight gain and liver and muscle fat deposition and reversed insulin resistance as assessed by insulin responsive substrate-1 phosphorylation on serine 312 in liver and muscles. Activation of FXR reduced liver expression of genes involved in fatty acid synthesis, lipogenesis, and gluconeogenesis. In studying the insulin resistance of 29 people with Hepatitis C, Australian researchers have confirmed that they have high insulin resistance, a precursor to diabetes. However, almost all insulin resistance was in muscle, with little or none in the liver, a very surprising finding given that Hepatitis C is a liver disease. However, research has not addressed higher risk and Asian populations. The authors examined the association between soft drinks and juice and the risk of type 2 diabetes among Chinese Singaporeans enrolled in a prospective cohort study of 43,580 participants aged 45–74 years and free of diabetes and other chronic diseases at baseline. The incidence of physician-diagnosed type 2 diabetes was assessed by interview and validated; 2,273 participants developed diabetes during follow-up. After adjustment for potential lifestyle and dietary confounders, participants consuming ≥2 soft drinks per week had a relative risk of type 2 diabetes of 1.42 (95% confidence interval (CI): 1.25, 1.62) comp... The Association Between the Peroxisome Proliferator-Activated Receptor-{gamma}2 (PPARG2) Pro12Ala Gene Variant and Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: A HuGE Review and Meta-Analysis The peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor- gene (PPARG) has been implicated in the etiology of type 2 diabetes mellitus and has been investigated in numerous epidemiologic studies. In this Human Genome Epidemiology review, the authors assessed this relation in an updated meta-analysis of 60 association studies. Electronic literature searches were conducted on September 14, 2009. Population-based cohort, case-control, cross-sectional, or genome-wide association studies reporting associations between the PPARG Pro12Ala gene variant (rs1801282) and type 2 diabetes were included. An updated literature-based meta-analysis involving 32,849 type 2 diabetes cases and 47,456 controls in relation to the PPARG Pro12Ala variant was conducted. To be commercially viable, new drugs should improve [Delta]HbA1c by about 0.8% or more and possess safety profiles similar to newer anti-diabetic agents. Thus, this study proposes a suite of simple yet powerful tools to guide type-2-diabetes drug development. Copyright © 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. Authors: de Souza Silva FM, Rocha Alves da Silva MH, Bracht A, Eller GJ, Constantin RP, Yamamoto NS
Although metformin has been used to treat type 2 diabetes for several decades, the mechanism of its action on glucose metabolism remains controversial. To further assess the effect of metformin on glucose metabolism this work was undertaken to investigate the acute actions of metformin on glycogenolysis, glycolysis, gluconeogenesis, and ureogenesis in perfused rat livers. Metformin (5 mM) inhibited oxygen consumption and increased glycolysis and glycogenolysis in livers from fed rats. In perfused livers of fasted rats, the drug (concentrations higher than 1.0 mM) inhibited oxygen consumption and glucose production from lactate and pyruvate. Gluconeogenesis and ureogenesis from alanine we... Effect of Long-Term Intraperitoneal Zinc Administration on Liver Glycogen Levels in Diabetic Rats Subjected to Acute Forced Swimming. This study aims to examine the effect of zinc administration on liver glycogen levels of rats in which diabetes was induced with streptozotocin and which were subjected to acute swimming exercise. The study was conducted on 80 adult Sprague-Dawley male rats, which were equally allocated to eight groups: group 1, general control; group 2, zinc-administrated control; group 3, zinc-administrated diabetic control; group 4, swimming control; group 5, zinc-administrated swimming; group 6, zinc-administrated diabetic swimming; group 7, diabetic swimming; group 8, diabetic control group. In order to induce diabetes, animals were injected with 40 mg/kg intraperitoneal (ip) streptozotocin. The injections were repeated in the same dose after 24 h.
